Massey competed in Oratory, Talent, Ease of Manner/Projection (formal wear) and Question and Answer. He was also awarded Mr. Oratory for having the highest score in the Oratory competition.
Massey will reign as Mr. HBCU 2010-2011 accepting special appearances and presentations, receive a $1,500 scholarship and four hours of studio time with multi-platinum, Grammy award-winning artist Nelly.
The Mr. HBCU Program is one of two programs focusing on Black college men, the first being the Mr. Collegiate African American Scholarship Pageant Program, created in 1990 at Prairie View A&M University, in Texas.
The Mr. Collegiate African American Pageant, the first of its kind in the world for men and particularly Black men, was first staged at Prairie View A&M University in April 1992. The goal of the Program is to eradicate the negative stereotypes of Black men by creating a model of excellence for a positive belief in oneself and race, and encouraging individual and group achievement in the pursuit of excellence. We aim to recognize the achievement of the majority of Black men and with emphasis on reaching back to help the minority.
Candidates compete for more than $10,000 in scholarships and prizes, and the opportunity to represent the national program. Competition includes a private interview with Judges, personal platform (oratory), talent, formal attire and on-stage interview and question.
After a few years on hiatus, the pageant is being reinstituted in Fall 2010. Mr. Damany Mayfield was the last Black College King to hold the title.
