Kyle Thalmus Maronie is the new Mr. Prairie View A&M
University for 2010, a position he was elevated to in January 2010 to complete the term held by Michael Love of Houston.
In the April 2009 pageant Maronie wowed the judges with his
powerful portrayal of the venerable Paul Robeson. His platform during his
tenure is to focus on black men’s health awareness because “he believes that
with early detection and prevention, we can save the men from a variety of
health-related diseases and even death.”
Maronie hales from the Commonwealth of Dominica, in the
Caribbean. He moved to the United States and has been a resident of Houston
since he was nine years old. Kyle graduated from Forest Brook High School and
entered Prairie View A&M University in 2007 to pursue a degree in history
and theater arts. His career goals are to earn the Ph.D. in history and the
doctor of jurisprudence law degree.
He serves as a positive role model for the students at the
university and has provided mentorship to high school students in the summer
pre-college programs at the university. Maronie is visionary and innovative and
seized the opportunity to assist the university in establishing its first paper
recycling project as the director of Environmental Sustainability for the
Student Government Association and the Students In Free Enterprise team. He is
also responsible for hosting the Financial Literacy and History of Fashions
program for the SIFE team.
Maronie holds membership and leadership positions in the
Catholic Newman Association (President), Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society
(President), Student In Free Enterprise, (Director for Environmental
Sustainability), Student Government Association (Director, Panther Pete Goes
Green), Toastmasters International (Sergeant at Arms), Frederick Douglass
Leadership Institute, the W. E. DuBois History Club and a Career Services
Ambassador.
In addition to his organizational affiliation, Maronie finds
time to volunteer with various community cleanups and services to Houston Food
Bank, tutoring and mentoring the young men in his residence hall, and serving
on university-wide committees (Students Fee Allocation and Buildings and
Naming.)
Maronie believes that young men, particularly black men,
need to step up and take responsibility for their achievements and actions. He
is guided by the philosophical words “Up, you mighty race, accomplish what you
will.” espoused by Marcus Garvey, and is the benchmark for his relationship
with his peers and contemporaries.
Maronie is also an aspiring politician and is a potential
candidate president of the Student Government Association at Prairie View
A&M University spring 2010.
